Extraordinary People: Mother Jeff Garcia

Every other Tuesday, mother Jeff would go to BGC from Makati to mentor our newly formed toastmasters club (one of the many clubs under his wing). He is not compensated in any way to do it but still does it anyway. Considering the traffic, additional costs (Grab from Makati to BGC ), and of course the most precious resource, time, I am awed by how he and his team are able to do it every time.

It's not just his attendance though, it's way more than that. I remember one of the laws in John Maxwell's book, Law of the Lid, which says that a group's potential is limited by the leader. This makes a lot of sense because a group can only go so far as the skills of the leader. We are fortunate as a club because we are being mentored by an exceptional speaker. I heard him do a table topics (impromptu speech) recently and I am amazed because he really knows his craft. This gives us, club members, a lot of room to learn and grow from.

On top his skills as a public speaker, he also knows a lot about leadership. I like what he said during one of our meetings that his main criteria if we are doing well as a club is renewals. Will people renew every 6 months? Are the members having fun and growing? I can relate this with Jeff Bezos' (CEO of Amazon) focus on customers, in our case, members. At the end of the day, are the members happy and getting value from the club?

If you look up the definition of mother (verb), it would return 'to bring up with care and affection'. These two big words are manifested by Jeff every time he braves the traffic to attend our meetings, by becoming our role model in public speaking and by showing his genuine concern for us. There's no other word more apt to describe Jeff Garcia's brand of care and affection to us than his motherly love.

Thank you very much mother Jeff. We appreciate your every effort and time to hone each of us. It's an honor to be one of your children.
