Bangkok, Thailand ranks at the top for the most visited city in the world. Influx of tourists from different nationalities go here to spend - and one of the top expense is food. With a lot of competition though, a restaurant needs to stand out from the crowd. One business owner stood out for me - Max.
Language.
When we were in his restaurant, I saw how he communicates to his clients in their respective language. One time, there are no vacant seats outside so he told a group of Japanese in Nihongo if they want to seat inside. They did. He can hold conversations in five different languages: Thai, Japanese, English, Chinese and Spanish. He also knows a bit of Korean, French, German and Italian - enough to build rapport. I tried to learn Mandarin (Chinese) before but it was super difficult. So hats off to Max for his effort to learn other languages.
Service.
The couple beside our table looked disappointed at one point. Max noticed this right away and proactively said to them that he will follow up their orders. In short, their order arrived late. To make up for it, Max gave them a discount on their food and apologized for the delay. Before the couple left, he asked if he can perform magic. In two minutes, he amazed the whole restaurant with his show. In my opinion, the apology, the discount on the bill and the entertainment all made up for the delay in food. In the end, I think the couple left feeling happy that they were treated and served well.
Hardwork.
It's already 11 years since Max took over the restaurant of his aunt. He said there are a lot of challenges but they are thriving. If you eat in his restaurant, you'll surely notice his energy. I can say he's hands-on with the business and works super hard to make sure his marketing, sales, and operations goes well. According to him, he's the Chief Entertainment Officer of his restaurant and he will do everything to entertain his clients and leave the establishment on a positive light.
I don't know what business you are in but Max right here has a lot to teach us. Speak in your customers' language. Serve your clients well. Work super hard. Would you like to add any lesson for budding entrepreneurs? Let me know in the comments section.
PS: Look for his restaurant in Khao San area the next time you visit Bangkok. Comment your picture there if you do hehe.
