Extraordinary People: Glenn Barit

Alagad ng Sining

There's a deep sense of courage to pursue one's passion and stick to it no matter what. To do a project out of love without expecting anything in return is not the ordinary thing to do in this world. Mas matanda ako sa kapatid ko pero malayong mas mature at advance siya mag-isip kumpara sa akin.

I have seen how my brother evolved through the years with his craft. He started telling stories through his blog before back when he was in high school - parang Bob Ong ang kanyang style. Nakakatuwa basahin nun dati - nasa wika natin at talagang kwela (meron pa ba yun Glenn?). Sa simula pa man, kakikitaan na ng galing sa pagsulat ng kwento ang kapatid ko. Pero hindi kasi nagtatapos ang lahat sa galing at talento, kailangan mo itong pagyamanin, palaguin at paghirapan. Nasama siya last year sa 'by invitation' script writing workshop ni Ricky Lee - isa sa mga beteranong screenwriter ng film industry. At tingin ko malaki ang kanyang pinaglago bilang filmmaker dahil dito.

Multi-Awarded

Glenn won a number of awards locally and was invited by film festivals as far as South Korea to showcase his films. His awards include MMDA Metro Manila Film Festival Short Films Best Picture, FAMAS Grand Jury Prize, Cinemalaya Shorts Finalist, Active Vista, Sinag Maynila Short Film Finalist at marami pang iba.

Most recently, he was awarded a grant by the Quezon City Government to produce his first ever full length film, Cleaners - shot in our hometown Tuguegarao City! Hindi pala biro ang hirap at pagod (at gastos) ng isang buong pelikula. Naging dilemma ito sa kapatid ko dahil kung magpapaproduce siya sa production companies, mawawala ang kanyang independence sa kanyang obra. Kung hindi naman, mahirapan siya buuin ang pelikula dahil sa tight na budget. Malalim pala ang ibig sabihin ng "independent" sa independent films.

Passion

Ang magpatuloy sa paggawa ng mga obra na hindi papaapekto sa commercial considerations nito ay napakahirap. Tingin ko, ito ay napakagandang metaphor sa kung ano ang tinatahak na buhay ng kapatid ko ngayon. Sabi nila, isang sikreto sa buhay ang pumili ng vocation na talagang bubuhusan mo ng pagmamahal - tingin ko ganoon si Glenn sa paggawa ng pelikula.

With Glenn's unique and never-before-seen style in telling stories, I won't be surprised if he'll be a National Artist for Film one day. He's one for me now.
