Reflections on Mentorship

Acne or more popularly known as pimples has always been my problem. My skin care routine before has always been straightforward – Safeguard. One day, I chanced upon a Youtube vlog of Matt D’Avella

and got inspired with his recommendation to “Moisturize”. At the back of my head, skin care routine has always been marketed for women so it’s not so manly to try skin care products. So I ignored what other people might think, and followed Matt D’Avella’s advice.

What I did next is amazing but so simple. I just looked around, observed the people who seems to have their acne under control (because of their flawless face – thanks friends). And then I asked. I asked what they do. I asked what products they use. I asked how they maintain their impeccable skin. I asked how they take care of their face from the moment they wake up to their sleep. And then I tried to replicate their process. I tried to mimic what they do and see if the results will change for me.

It’s maybe two months now since I bought the products that I’m currently using, and I can say I’m satisfied with the results so far. Acne is still a problem up to this day, but I can say by mere observation that the number of my pimples reduced significantly.

I’m trying to reflect what I did there. I started with the dissatisfaction with my pimples. I wanted to change a certain result in my life. I looked for people who I can model. I asked them if they can mentor me on this specific area. I executed the plans they gave and iterated the process until I get the same result.

I just used the acne as an example but we can apply this insight I guess to any aspect of our lives. There will always be areas where we are weak or needs improvement. I think it’s a good idea to remain humble and seek the counsel of other people. Look for mentors and be mentored. And keep Safeguard off your face.
