BSP Governor Ben Diokno has been heading reforms in the government for the past 40 years. I don't know how he did it but I noticed he was able to master his craft, execute with hardwork and replicate himself thru the noble profession of teaching.
Fundamentals. When you look at his education, you will notice that he has a BS/Masters in Public Administration and Masters in Economics in UP Diliman, and then a Masters in Political Economy and PhD in Economics both from the US. The guy knows his craft well. I remember the quote from Abraham Lincoln "Give me 6 hours to cut down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe."
Execution. The knowledge did not stop there though. It's one thing to know and another to gain the trust of our national leaders across time and actually implement his advice and recommendations. He was able to execute and implement changes that we benefit from up to this day. He talke
d about easily passing 26 reforms during the time of our late President Cory because there was no Congress in place then (revolutionary government). And then there was the Value Added Tax (tax on consumption rather than income) and reform on government procurement law among others. Up to this day, he continues to lend his expertise for our country at 71 by heading the central bank.
Professor Emeritus. He loves teaching and that has ripple effects I guess when you replicate yourself and try to expand the knowledge you gained throughout the years. As a retired professor in UP Diliman, he was able to mold the next generation of leaders like himself.
I hope within my lifetime I can also contribute to nation building even at a small fraction relative to what Gov Diokno did. The fulfillment to have uplifted the financial well being of many Filipinos (at a macro and systemic level) is priceless. Live a simple life, a meaningful life, a life of contribution.
"Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." - John F. Kennedy
